THE 21

A letter from Juggle, on the 21st of every month.

Hello friend,

You signed up for Juggle a while back, and then you did not hear much from us. Here is the first of these letters, and here is what happened in between.

We rebuilt it. The old Juggle asked you to keep it up to date. This one keeps up with you.

What Juggle is

Juggle puts the people you want to stay close to on one screen, as faces. Twenty-one of them, free, and always will be. Twenty-one is a Fibonacci number, and it is bigger than it sounds: we are trying to improve a billion relationships, and a billion is only twenty-one, held well, by enough of us.

Four things do the work.

A coach that writes the first message. It knows who you have been in touch with and when, puts one person in front of you each day, and drafts the note in your voice. You read it, change what you like, and send it yourself. It never sends anything on its own. And it reads who and when. Never what you said, never the subject, never what a call was about. That line is the design rather than a setting.

Your history, with no typing. Connect a Mac and your texts, your calls and your time together count on their own. The founder connected his own Mac and watched more than 50,000 real connections appear in under five minutes.

Birthdays two weeks early. Not on the morning of. Two weeks out, so you can run into your best friend at the grocery store, tell them how much they matter to you, and already know what is coming.

Plans your people can answer in two taps. Pick a night and pick who you want there. Juggle writes the invitation, nobody needs an account or an app to say yes, and everyone can see who else is coming.

One thing worth knowing

A court in New Mexico put a number on attention this month. Meta was ordered to pay another $567 million over the harm its platforms did to young people, bringing the total to $942 million. Meta says it will appeal.

What caught my attention was the language. Judge Bryan Biedscheid called the company a public nuisance, and reached for the comparison of a factory that pollutes the river everyone downstream drinks from. That says the harm was not a product working badly. It was a product working exactly as designed.

Most of the money, $420 million, goes to treatment.

Treatment is what you build after. Connection is what you build instead.

One thing worth doing

Somebody came to mind while you were reading that. Not the person who needs you most. The one who arrived first, unasked. That is your own attention telling you something, and it is usually right.

Tell them they matter to you. Four words, and you can send them exactly as they are:

You matter to me.

Say it plainly, or with a phone call, or by showing up on a Tuesday. All of them land. One of them takes eleven seconds.

An early cut of our film is up. Eighty years in ninety seconds, and it is the closest we have come to explaining why any of this matters. Best with the sound on.
